Prof. Cliff Beevers, Heriot-Watt, Chair Professor Cliff Beevers has taught Mathematics for over thirty years at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and was granted the title Professor Emeritus in 2005. Cliff has worked for over two decades in the area of Computer Aided Assessment mainly in the field of Mathematics. Through projects like CALM, MathWise, Interactive PastPapers and SCHOLAR he has sought to enhance the student experience in both secondary and tertiary education. In 2003 he was awarded an OBE for his contributions to Scottish Education Marie Dougan, Glow Programme Director, Learning and Teaching Scotland, Details to be posted here soon
Bobby Eilliot, SQA Current position: Qualifications Manager within the Scottish Qualifications Authority. Previously taught for 22 years in various positions in school and college sectors; his last position was Head of Department in a large Further Education College in Glasgow. Graduated in 1978 with a degree in Computer Science from the University of Strathclyde, he is currently undertaking a Masters Degree in E-Learning at Edinburgh University. Bobby was responsible for developing SQA's Diploma in E-Assessment - the world's first national qualification in e-assessment - and a number of successful IT qualifications (including PC Passport). He has most recently just completed development of SQA's first paperless qualification (Internet Safety). His professional interests include the theory of assessment and the use of Internet in the assessment process, having recently published a paper entitled "Assessment 2.0 - Using Web 2.0 to modernise assessment."
Sue Hart, City and Guilds Sue Hart is a Chartered Marketer and has achieved a Masters in Strategic Marketing Management. Previous experience ranges from working for technology start up Blackberry to PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Sue Hart joined City & Guilds as a Marketing Consultant in September 2004 to project manage a variety of marketing campaigns. The role involved liaising with training professionals across a range of industries such as security, teaching, sports, construction and IT within the UK as well as on an International scale. In May 2007, Sue moved departments to join the New Ventures team who are responsible for building the e-business across the organisation. Having successful achieved 2.15m high stakes online tests through City & Guilds GOLA (Global Online Assessment) capability since its launch in September 2002, the current focus has expanded to formative and diagnostic testing. We continue to raise awareness of how online testing can benefit learners, lecturers and employers
Stuart Jones, BeCTA Stuart’s main role is to work with Government and key strategic partners to create policy frameworks which support and sustain change in teaching and learning. He provides support and influence for the embedding of ICT and e-learning within existing and future policy. This includes supporting ICT in schools; sixth form, further education colleges, work based and adult community based learning programmes. He leads Becta’s developments on e-assessments, e-portfolios and the use of data in learning and teaching. Stuart has a varied career background in both the private and public sectors. He has taught physics, information technology and computer science in Sixth Form Schools and Further Education; Human Resource, Strategic and Quality Management in the context of organisational development and has also owned and run a very successful industry training and consultancy business, specialising in leadership and change management.
Dr I R Gomersall B.Sc., Ph.D., C.Phys., M.Inst.P., FRSA. Bob Gomersall is Chairman and founder of BTL Group Ltd. (set up in 1985) and Virtual College Group plc (set up in 1995). The focus of BTL’s work is on Learning and Assessment Systems and Content. Virtual College specialises in work based and online training. Bob is also Chairman of the Advanced Digital Institute, which he started developing in 2002, Chairman of the Yorkshire Forward Digital Cluster Board, and a member of the Airedale Partnership Board. He was educated at Leeds Grammar School and the universities of Durham and Bristol. He has worked as a Theoretical Physicist (at the Max Planck Institut, Stuttgart) and as a teacher of physics (at Manchester and Bradford Grammar Schools). He was Head of Physics at Bradford Grammar School before going full-time into business. He and his wife (who is a Medical General Practitioner in Bradford) have four children, 3 boys and a girl, ranging in age from 15 to 27 years old.
Joan Gormley, QCA Belfast Joan Gormley has been QCA’s Manager in Northern Ireland since the office first opened in May 1996. The primary function of the office is concerned with the regulation of NVQs but over the past 4 years Joan’s team has also been leading on e-assessment, supporting the Department for Employment and Learning’s e-learning strategy in Northern Ireland. The work on e-assessment culminated earlier this year in the launch of a dedicated website www.efutures.com. The website is designed to be a one-stop-shop for information and advice for centres and others involved in using e-assessment.
Linda Steedman, Managing Director of eCom Scotland, eCom is a premier provider of e-Assessment and eLearning solutions. Linda setup eCom as part of an EU research project in 1996 and spun it out in 1999, then completed the MBO in 2001 to take overall control of the company. Over the last 11 years eCom has been involved in research and development in new models and techniques of eAssessment & eLearning delivery Linda’s background is in education and technology over the past 20 years involved a variety of training & academic institutions, she has also run a number of very successful European research & development projects.Linda brings professionalism and enthusiasm to all her work, Linda has a personal focus on good instructional design and her attention to detail has resulted in client’s success with roll out of eLearning systems. Linda has experience of managing large public sector projects involving fully interactive eLearning resources including animation and video for a variety of learners. Some examples include; Scottish Parliament’s Discover-eNet system, BIIAB’s Publicans qualification assessment system, SQA’s Security Qualification License Assessment System, Careers Scotland’s Career Box system and SQA’s Spa Therapies. Linda was a founder member and Chairperson of the eLearning Alliance from 2005/7.
Martyn Ware, SQA Martyn Ware is SQA’s Business Manager for CAA, a position he has held since SQA first established a dedicated CAA team in May 2003. Prior to this Martyn has worked in a number of areas of SQA’s operations including most recently managing some of its international activities. Martyn has an MBA from the University of Strathclyde Graduate School of Business.
Peter Wilson, NIACE Peter Wilson works for NIACE as a Development Officer for Credit and Qualifications. From 1999 to 2003 he was seconded to Ufi as Head of Qualifications and Assessment, and since April 2004 he has been seconded part-time to the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority as Principal Adviser to the team developing the new Qualifications and Credit Framework, where he has been responsible for leading work on the technical features of the Framework. As part of his work for QCA he is leading work on the development of e-assessment opportunities within the new QCF
